Michael McCarthy Tribute From A Loyal Student

I took a TV pilot class last year and even attend a few writer's workshops held by my mentor Michael McCarthy. Who sadly, after a battle with cancer, passed away. I wanted to write this blog post to honor him and to say thank you for believing in me. Even though he's gone I'm glad I got to know him. Michael had a great respect for his mentor Del Close, and Del Close is quite the legend in the improv community and the founder of the iO Theater in Chicago.

Michael was my Del Close, he is in the top 5 of my favorite teachers I ever had. He offered so much advice on how to improve my TV pilot "51 Heroes" and he left his mark on many a student beside myself. I'm going to miss him and I wish I could have done a formal goodbye but for now I leave you with the last Facebook message he ever said to me. Along with some links so you the reader can learn a little bit more about the man himself. Rest in peace, Michael.

Was Cyclops Right Video Script

INT. BEDROOM-DAY

STEVEN BUCKY BUTLER, a nerdy overweight young man wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap, is sitting down while filming himself at his webcam.

BUCKY
Hello, I’m Steven Bucky Butler and well, let’s just cut to the chase. Was Cyclops right? It is a difficult question and one that I will try to answer right now.

Bucky takes off his sunglasses and looks at the viewers.

BUCKY
I can take off my sunglasses at any time, but you know who can’t? Scott Summers a.k.a. Cyclops. For you see, if Cyclops were to take off his specially made sunglasses or visor, the people around him would be fried by laser beams coming from his eyes. For that is his curse but yet also his blessing.

Bucky puts his sunglasses back on.

BUCKY
Cyclops lost his parents at a young age and was soon found by a man by the name of Charles Xavier a.k.a. Professor X. Professor X cared for the young mutant Cyclops and overtime a father/son relationship formed. Professor X taught Cyclops his views on human-mutant relations. Professor X wants a world where humans and mutants live together in peace. A world where humans and mutants are equal. Overtime Cyclops would take over as leader of the X-Men from Professor X and continue his ideals.

Bucky pulls out a Cyclops action figure.

CYCLOPS
Are you going to get to the point Mr. Butler?

BUCKY
Oh look, it’s the man himself, Cyclops. Do you have anything to say?

CYCLOPS
I will let you talk for a little bit then I’ll say what I have to say.

BUCKY
Okay, but Cyclops went through a lot over his years in comics, but he will always be one of the founding members of the X-Men and a true believer in Professor X’s ideals. But I believe someone else has a different view of human-mutant relations.

Bucky pulls out a Magneto action figure while holding the Cyclops action figure in his other hand.

MAGNETO
I believe you were going to mention me, Mr. Butler?

BUCKY
Magneto, longtime enemy of the X-Men and a man...

MAGNETO
Mutant!

BUCKY
Mutant who doesn’t share the ideals of Professor X. Magneto believes that mutants should be the dominant race and rulers of the world. But in terms for this video, I will just compare Professor X to Martin Luther King Jr. and Magneto to Malcolm X, for most of you non comic book fans out there.

CYCLOPS
But Magneto isn’t black?

MAGNETO
For once I agree with Cyclops.

BUCKY
Actually the point I wanted to make with that is the X-Men were created Stan Lee and Jack Kirby as an allegory for racism and prejudice, be it towards black people, gay people, or similar kinds of prejudice in the real world. I mean, when you think about it that’s what make the X-Men great is that they are relatable to the misfits of society. The outcasts if you will.

CYCLOPS
But why am I right, Mr. Butler?

MAGNETO
Yes you still haven’t answered that question.

BUCKY
Well, Cyclops is right because, if we stick to the themes of racism and prejudice that X-Men tend to talk about. I myself prefer to live in a world where all men and mutants are created equal. Where we can co-exist as equals and live in harmony. Not fear what is different, but accept it. So I believe Cyclops is right because his ideals just feel good. Also he is a superhero. And to be a hero means to save anyone, no matter if they are purple, red or fish.

MAGNETO
Fish?

Suddenly a Bishop action figure and a Nightcrawler action figure appear and tackle Magneto. Bucky laughs.

BUCKY
Well Cyclops, I suppose you need to lead your team into battle against Magneto. I know you’re the right man for the job.

Bucky salutes the Cyclops action figure.

CYCLOPS
Thanks, Mr. Butler.

BUCKY
Please Cyclops call me Bucky, now go help Bishop and Nightcrawler fight Magneto.

CYCLOPS
Okay Bucky, see you later.

Bucky sets the Cyclops action figure down and looks one last time at the webcam.

BUCKY
Thanks for watching and I believe Cyclops is right!

Spielberg The Bruiser's Epic Locker Room Movie (KWE/BWC Wrestling Comedy Sketch)

INT. LOCKER ROOM-DAY

LUCHA KING JR., a young male professional wrestler wearing a wrestling mask, and STAN MCOTTO, a young man wearing jeans and a white t-shirt, are hanging out together inside a locker room after their match earlier in the day.

STAN
Great work today Lucha King Jr., we almost won the championship.

LUCHA KING JR.
Stan, I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or...

SPIELBERG (O.S.)
And cut!

Suddenly SPIELBERG THE BRUISER, an overweight middle age man holding a film camera and smoking a cigar, walks over to Lucha King Jr. and Stan McOtto.

SPIELBERG
What the hell was that?

STAN
What are you doing now, Spielberg the Bruiser?

SPIELBERG
I’m making my epic, which you two are ruining it.

LUCHA KING JR.
You were just filming us now?

SPIELBERG
Well, for about an hour actually, but that’s besides the point. Now I have to reshoot this scene and...

STAN
Wait, we had no idea we were in a movie, or that you were filming us in general.

LUCHA KING JR.
Yeah. Also you didn’t film me with my mask off, did you?

SPIELBERG
There’s some nudity in my film, but that’s besides the point.

STAN
Spielberg, were you filming us changing in the locker room?

SPIELBERG
Don’t question my art! Now I’m going to reshoot this scene right now. Let’s start from the top. And action!

Spielberg the Bruiser continues to film Stan and Lucha King Jr. from a far when MOVIE STAR, a male middle age man wearing a business suit holding an award in his hand, enters the locker room.

MOVIE STAR
Don’t tell me I missed my big scene!

STAN
Movie Star! No, no, no! Spielberg the Bruiser, Movie Star, we’re not filming a movie so just go away!

SPIELBERG
And cut! Jesus, you ruined everything!

MOVIE STAR
Yeah Stan, you ruined everything.

SPIELBERG
I was actually talking about you Movie Star. Get out of my movie!

LUCHA KING JR.
You know what, I have an idea. Follow my lead Stan!

Lucha King Jr. punches Movie Star and Stan kicks Spielberg the Bruiser in the balls. Lucha King Jr. starts fighting Movie Star while Stan starts fighting Spielberg the Bruiser.

After a long fight, Stan slams Spielberg the Bruiser into a table while Lucha King Jr. hits Movie Star in the back with a chair. Spielberg the Bruiser and Movie Star lay on the locker room floor in pain. Lucha King Jr. picks up the award that Movie Star was holding a hits him in the head with it.

Lucha King Jr. hands the award to Stan and shakes his hand.

LUCHA KING JR.
At least you won something tonight, Stan.

STAN
Yeah, Movie Star’s stolen Oscar. Let’s go to the pawn shop and sell this.

LUCHA KING JR.
I wonder if it’s even real gold?

Stan and Lucha King Jr. exit the locker room while Spielberg the Bruiser and Movie Star slowly start to get up from the floor. Both of them clearly still in pain.

SPIELBERG
Oh man, that hurt like hell.

MOVIE STAR
Where’s my Oscar?

SPIELBERG
Oh crap. Those guys broke my camera. My film is ruined.

MOVIE STAR
I’m going to talk with Mr. Manly tonight.

SPIELBERG
About what, Movie Star?

MOVIE STAR
I think on next week’s show, I have an idea for the main event.

SPIELBERG
What, you and me team up in a tag team match against Stan McOtto and Lucha King Jr.?

MOVIE STAR
Pretty much, Spielberg. Revenge will soon be ours.

Movie Star starts laughing evilly and Spielberg the Bruiser starts laughing evilly alongside him.

Wrestling Girls Sleepover Sketch (KWE/BWC Wrestling Comedy Sketch)

INT. LIVING ROOM-NIGHT

HILLBILLY JOY, an obese hillbilly young woman dressed in hillbilly attire and wearing a trucker cap, SUPER JUDY, a thin young woman dressed like a superhero, FAT ASS SALLY, a thin young woman with a huge butt wearing short shorts and crop top, and ANNA YOUNG, a thin young woman dressed in a swimsuit holding a surf board, are having a pillow fight.

Hillbilly Joy has a piece of pizza in her mouth while hitting Super Judy with a pillow. Fat Ass Sally and Anna Young are hitting each other with pillows.

KAZAM, a buff young man wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap, and DEAN DEATHLOCK, a buff young man with brown hair covered in tattoos wearing wrestling tights, are watching the girls have a pillow fight outside through the living room window.

KAZAM
Dean, this is awesome.

DEAN
Shut up Kazam! They might hear us.

The girls stop having a pillow fight and sit together in a circle as Kazam and Dean continue to watch from outside the living room window.

SALLY
Okay girls, time to play truth or dare.

ANNA
No Sally, I don’t want to play truth or dare.

SUPER JUDY
Why Anna, is it because you’re chicken?

ANNA
I’m not chicken Super Judy?

JOY
Yum, chicken.

SALLY
Shut up Hillbilly Joy. Now Anna, truth or dare?

ANNA
Um, dare.

SALLY
Kiss Hillbilly Joy’s smelly feet.

ANNA
What.

SUPER JUDY
Oh man, you have to do it Anna, this is truth or dare.

ANNA
Alright fine.

Anna kisses Hillbilly Joy’s foot and after kissing Hillbilly Joy’s foot she barfs.

SALLY
Alright Super Judy, truth or dare?

SUPER JUDY
Dare.

SALLY
Eat Anna’s puke.

SUPER JUDY
Rats.

Super Judy picks up some of Anna’s barf and eats it only for her to start vomiting. Fat Ass Sally and Hillbilly Joy start to laugh.

Kazam and Dean meanwhile look on in horror at the events they are seeing. Super Judy stops vomiting and we hear the ding of a microwave in the background.

JOY
Popcorn’s done. I’ll go get it.

Hillbilly Joy exits the scene to go get the popcorn while Anna and Super Judy look pissed.

ANNA
How can you eat at a time like this?

SUPER JUDY
I’m done playing truth or dare. It’s not fun anymore.

ANNA
I have to go to the bathroom and brush my teeth.

SUPER JUDY
Same here. Then I probably need to take an antibiotic so I don’t get sick because I seriously ate someone else’s vomit. God I’m such an idiot.

Anna and Super Judy exit the scene and Fat Ass Sally is alone in the living room and she lets out a big fart. Kazam and Dean smell the fart through a crack in the window and they both pass out.

Hillbilly Joy reenters the room with an empty bowl while itching her belly.

SALLY
Where’s the popcorn?

JOY
I ate it on the way here.

Hillbilly Joy burps and Fat Ass Sally passes out after smelling Hillbilly Joy’s burp.

JOY
I win!
