Bug World (Full Short Story)

What may appear to be an ordinary suburban backyard in a nice neighborhood, is filled with magic and wonder. Four kingdoms reign supreme, The Ants, The Beetle, The Butterfly, The Bee, and The Worm. I am a young knight in the Ant kingdom. My name is Andrew Ant and I served the crown since before I could remember. I will do anything for my kingdom and for the royal family. One day shook my world, the princess was kidnapped by the Beetle royal family. I, along with my mentor, a wizard mantis named Marzola and five other soldiers in the queen’s army, ventured out to the Beetle kingdom to rescue our princess.

It would not be without challenges though. The con artist mosquitos, the thuggish scorpions, the silent deadly worms, the monstrous frogs of the pond and of course the deadly big bad beetles. All the while we were being watched by the evil weta wizard named Wardechai. Wardechai was a former student of my mentor Marzola and a rare weta not native to these lands. Now our quest begins as it starts to rain before we have even left the ant hill. Rain drops killed two of our soldiers in our group now it was just my master, myself and three other soldiers. Until it stopped raining, we hide under a huge leaf. Once the rain stopped, we continued our quest to save our princess. My master Marzola gave me and the other soldiers the special orange mist. The special orange mist was given to us by the god in the white suit. With his magic device our god sprayed the orange mist which legend tells gave us our magical powers and intelligence.

Once we inhaled the orange mist, we resumed our quest. After battling many enemies along the way, we finally reached the Beetle kingdom. Wardechai was clearly expecting us along with Prince Beetle by his side. With a snap of his pinchers, Wardechai made the rest of the remaining soldiers disappear. “This is a suicide mission for you, it’s our reign as the dominant bug in the world is here,” yelled Wardechai. “Never, long live the ants!” I cried. I rushed in but with another snap of his pinchers, Wardechai pushed me aside using his magical powers. Then out of nowhere, my master Marzola killed Wardechai in a sneak attack while I laid down in pain. After slaying his former student, Prince Beetle did a sneak attack of his own and killed my master. As I laid in pain and with my master dying, my master Marzola uttered his last words to me. “Go to the forbidden lands, Andrew. There you will learn the truth about our world,” said Marzola in a hushed pained voiced. Marzola died and Prince Beetle began to eat his corpse. Then I remembered that I had a jar of mist in my pocket which I then inhaled. The orange mist healed me, but before I could get my revenge on the Beetle royal family. He appeared, our god in the white suit. Our god picked me and Prince Beetle up. Prince Beetle and I were inside separate prisons being transported to the forbidden lands.

Now inside the forbidden lands, I finally learned the truth of the orange mist. Our god wasn’t a god, but a mere human. Our god was a man named Doctor Higgins who worked at a pharmaceutical company. And the holy orange mist was Doctor Higgins creation, which is a drug that increases intelligence and improves memory. My bug brothers and sisters were just test subjects by a madman who wanted to profit off a drug to help other humans. But Doctor Higgins would later regret his creation as on that day, all the bugs united and killed Doctor Higgins. We took over his home and his backyard. Peace reigned in all the lands of the bug kingdoms. I would eventually marry the ant princess and become the king of the ant kingdom.

As I grew older, my bug brothers and I would often debate if we should take over the rest of the human world. We may be small but due to the remaining orange mist that we had, our powers and intelligence increased where we could compete with the humans. After we killed Doctor Higgins, his family arrived to his house to check their elderly family member. Once his family discovered that Doctor Higgins was killed, they called the police. The police were slowly realizing that it was we, the bugs in Doctor Higgins backyard that killed him. The police decided to exterminate us. Our war with the police officers began. With the aid of the orange mist once again, we killed all the police officers. It was on that day we decide to begin our war with the entire human race and expand our world outside of a suburban backyard.

Years would pass as our war with the humans raged on. But the orange mist made us unstoppable. Even better, the orange mist kills humans, but not bugs and amphibians. In the end, the orange mist only worked for us the whole time. After many years of warring with humans, we won. And now the entire world was ours. It wasn’t a happily ever after though. Because now there began in fighting between the all the bug kingdoms who ruling over this new world. Even worse, with my approval no less, I had a hand in destroying the entire planet. You see, our magic wasn’t strong enough anymore, so we went to science. Thus, a nuclear war started and ended as soon as it began. Now, after the last nuclear bomb dropped, we all were killed. In the end, it wasn’t worth it. We could have been better than the humans, but we became the very thing we hated.

Now on this empty bug world without any bugs, there is no life left. The last memory I will ever have is my family and I huddled together in my throne room as we watched the world burn with my youngest daughter uttering her last words that I would never forget. “Why?” she cried as she died in my arms. As the nuclear blast covered my eyes, that’s the only thing, I thought about why it was finally over. Why indeed, why indeed.
